Earth Day

Happy Earth Day. April 22nd, 2010

The first Earth Day, observed across the country on April 22, 1970, crystallized a growing public concern about ecological crises. Earth Day was the product of local grassroots action to increase environmental awareness but it also focused the nation's political agenda on urgent environmental issues.

It was Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson who in September 1969 proposed a national teach-in on the environment to send a message to Washington that public opinion was solidly behind a bold political agenda on environmental problems.

Inspired by the campus activism of the late 1960s, he employed a team of experienced students to help him respond to the immediate and overwhelming public excitement for a national day on the environment. However, Nelson insisted the first Earth Day's activities be created not by organizers in Washington, but by individuals and groups in their own communities. As a result of this empowering vision, 1 in 10 Americans participated in the first Earth Day, drawing extensive attention from the media and jump-starting an era of bold environmental legislation.

Today marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day! Get out and celebrate your earth!

Million Trees NYC This Saturday at 8am!!!!!

A Letter for Million Trees Volunteers
Meeting Saturday, April 24th at 8am in the Goddard lobby

Dear volunteers,

Thank you for participating in this Saturday’s volunteer day to plant 500 trees at Spring Creek Park and support MillionTreesNYC in our mission to create a cleaner and greener NYC. We have a very exciting and fun-filled day ahead of us and want to be sure that everyone’s prepared to dig in. If you signed up a group please forward this information on.

Time: Please note that registration takes place at 9:30am and the event lasts until 2pm. Please make every effort to

show up on time. Your contact on site is Andy Rabb (646) 879-6554.

Volunteer waiver: We require all volunteers to sign a waiver before participating. The waivers will be at registration when you arrive in the morning. If you are under 18 years of age, please fill out the waiver form attached, have a parent or guardian sign, and bring it with you on Saturday.

Proper attire: Volunteers should wear comfortable clothing they will not mind getting dirty. Please wear sneakers (no flip-flops or open toed-shoes). Please note: Volunteers are responsible for their belongings. NYRP and Parks staff cannot insure personal belongings will be safe if left unattended.

Provisions: Lunch and water will be provided thanks to RCano Events.

Inclement weather: This is a rain or shine event. We’ll bring extra ponchos!

Getting There:

By Car: Van Wyck Expy (678 South) to Belt Pkwy/Shore Pkwy West. Take Exit 15 – Erskine Street. Exit 15 turns right and becomes Erskine St/Erskine Loop. Right on Seaview Ave. OR: Take Linden Blvd East to Fountain Ave. Make a right on Fountain Ave. Make a right onto Seaview Ave.

Public Transit: Take the A train to Euclid Ave. Take the Q8 bus (East NY- Gateway Mall) to Fountain Ave & Brooklyn Development Center. Walk South on Fountain Ave to Seaview Ave.

Don’t know how to plant a tree? Please review the attached guide to proper tree planting technique. You will also be given a demonstration on site before planting. Please pay attention, and feel free to ask questions of Parks Natural Resources staff.

Green Stream in the Washington Square News Today!!!

A Very, Very proud RA and Stream Leader!

The Green Stream & The 4th Floor (Green Floor at Goddard) are featured in the Washington Square News' Green Issue This week! Pick up your copy today!

On the Green Stream floor at Goddard residence hall, hall decorations such as a three-dimensional "Life of a Bottle" mural remind students to recycle every day.

"Strengthening our relationship with our shared planet through an action such as recycling is one of the most important phenomena of our college experiences," said Wagner graduate student Suhaly Bautista, the floor's resident assistant.

Stern freshman and Green Stream floor resident Katherine Corson thinks a good way to make recycling easier in dorms is to educate students about incorrect recycling.

"People recycle things, with good intention, that can't be recycled," she said.

Some students, for example, tend to recycle items that are actually biodegradable, like Weinstein dining trays that are made from recycled paper.
